Ao Nang: A Thai Beach Town

Ao Nang: A Thai Beach Town

We spent three nights in Ao Nang, one of Thailand’s west coast beach towns in the Krabi area. It was beautiful. We spent most of our time living the beach bum life, relaxing on the beach and then reading by the hotel pool. One highlight was chartering a long tail boat to visit Tup and Poda Islands which are about 30 minutes from the mainland. It’s hard to put into words how beautiful it was, so we’ll just share some pictures to sum it up:

Our room at Verandah hotel in Ao Nang. This is the nicest room we’ve had!!
Sunset in Ao Nang.
Kelly and Terri.
There are really big cliffs at the beach.
You can buy beers on the beach from guys who walk around selling them out of coolers. Cheap and very convenient!
You can also get grilled corn!
On the long tail boat headed to Tup Island.
Boats parked at Tup Island.
We started with a quick walk all around the island. It took some shallow wading and was a fun way to get oriented.
Swimming at Tup Island.
View of Poda Island from the water. It was beautiful.
One of the long tail drivers lent us some snorkeling equipment. Thanks!

There’s only one thing we would have done differently in Ao Nang:

Our goal for one of our days was to do a full day boat tour that went to Hong Island and the Four Islands, all nearby to Ao Nang. This had been highly recommended by Katherine and Ryan from Chai Lai and seemed like a great way to see the surrounding islands.  The weather forecast was pretty bad for our final day, the day we had reserved for the tour, and the tour was ultimately canceled when enough people didn’t sign up. The weather ended up being perfect (we were so lucky!) but we didn’t make it on this tour. Our consolation trip to Tup and Poda islands was amazing, but if we had the chance we’d take another stab at the longer tour to some of the more remote islands. If you make it to Ao Nang, give it a try!
